Dress-code checker

Tourists get turned away at Notre-Dame, the Sacré-Cœur, Michelin-starred restaurants, the Casino de Monte-Carlo, and upscale clubs for the wrong outfit. Pick the situation, see what works.

What this tool actually solves

Two categories of dress-code enforcement in France:

Cathedrals are the tourist #1 mistake. The "shoulders covered" rule applies at the entrance (security check will look), and at the choir area in some places.

How to read the result

Three lines: required (do this or you'll be turned away), recommended (matches the venue), avoid (will get you refused).

Limitations

Dress-code enforcement varies by venue and door staff. A "smart casual" club may let you in with trainers on Wednesday and refuse on Saturday. The patterns below are 2024–2025 averages.

FAQ

Can I wear shorts to a cathedral?
Mostly yes in summer (the rule is "covered shoulders, not shorts). Sacré-Cœur enforces shoulders strictly. Notre-Dame is more lenient. Outside Paris (Chartres, Reims) the rule is loosely enforced.
What about sneakers at a club?
Most Paris clubs will refuse "running" trainers (Nike Air Max, Asics Gel-Kayano). "Fashion" trainers (Common Projects, Veja, Balenciaga Speed) are fine. The test is whether the sneaker was built for sport.
